Altec Lansing Reinvents the Portable Digital Theater With The IMV 712

If you want to make someone crazy happy, then consider the new Altec Lansing IMV 712. The IM stands for In Motion, one of the first iPod-compatible systems on the market. Over the years, they have consistently revised and upgraded their product line.

The IMV 712 takes this several steps forward with the inclusion of video. If you were expecting a miniscule video screen, think again. The IMV 712’s screen is a bright and brilliant 8.5-inch LCD display in the center of the unit and can play your movies and videos with accompanying first-rate sound. It sports the expected iPod dock, external audio input, and even an S-Video output jack. Unfortunately, the video screen is not currently compatible with the latest sixth-generation iPods, such as the Classic or iPod Touch in terms of the video output, due to a decision by Apple to disable the video output on the new iPods.

One feature we loved was the inclusion of an alarm clock, so it can wake you up at home in time for work, or from a catnap in the office. One unexpected feature was the inclusion of a universal cradle for MP3 players, just in case you are one of the 5% that don’t use an iPod. The Altec Lansing IMV 712 might be a bit pricey, but we think it’s really a first-class system that deserves serious consideration that doesn’t skimp on sound, video, or quality.
