There was a day when if you came across a dozen new photo books a year, and you had the bases covered. Now, it seems that dozens of good photo books are published every day, so it’s hard to keep up. We reviewed a number of wonderful books this year, and narrowed it down to four that stood out. Louisiana Lens – Photographs from the Historic New Orleans Collection – John H. Lawrence. Countdown – Jeanine Michna-Bales and Adam Reynolds – A Visual Exploration of the Cold War’s Opposing Nuclear Architecture. Jamey Stilling – ATACAMA: Renewable Energy and Mining in the High Desert of Chile, and on a more practical level, Declutter Your Photo Life – Adam Pratt. Read our reviews to discover why these should on a shelf in your home soon.

2023 has been a bumper year for extraordinary musical releases, more than we could hope to cover in detail, so forgive us if we’ve left out your favorites. Here a few notable vendors. TRPTK, Native DSD, The Audiophile Society, 2L The Nordic Sound, and The Jazz Detective are all supplying superlative content, with various resolutions. Want to party a bit, check out The Rolling Stones – Grrr Live! on Bluray. A massive remixing and remastering of The Beatles - 1962–1967 (Red Album), and The Beatles - 1967–1970 (Blue Album) is probably the most important release of the year.

We don’t need to sneak LPs into our homes. Well, unless you don’t want to advertise spending $130 plus for an artisanal hand-pressed one-step LP of music you’ve owned for thirty years and know from heart. So, you still might be sneaking that into your house from a disapproving partner. But the point is, with streaming we don’t even need physical media. Although I still have a soft spot for tangible media, from LPs to Blu-ray, the bulk of our current listening is via streaming. Read on for our notes on different services.

An interview with master digital printer Jack Duganne, who began printing for Graham Nash, and who coined the term “Giclée,” and later founded Duganne Atellier. If you ever wondered where fine-art digital printmaking began, then listen to this interview. As the days get longer, a lot of energy goes into planning all sorts of parties, activities and celebrations for friends and family - everyone wants to get in on the fun! But while you are firing up the grill and setting up the badminton net, don’t forget to plan some fun for the cats in your life! We’ve found our cats don’t really care who is graduating, or if there’s a game of Marco Polo going on in the pool. But they were amused and delighted when we presented them with a set of interactive kitty puzzles and games from Cat Amazing.

I’m not sure about you, but my first notion of headphones or earphones came from my grandfather, Milton, who had one of those little mono earphones plugged into his little transistor radio, listening to Mets games. He let me try it, and even though the sound was a bit staticky and tinny, it was this amazing journey into another world. CanJam, an enthusiastic celebratory gathering of all things headphones, earphones, dedicated amps, DACs, and accessories, offered visitors a choice from $50 units to headphones and electronics costing many thousands of dollars. CanJams are held at various US and international locations, most recently at the New York Marriott Marquis. Everyone there was in high spirits.
