There was a day when if you came across a dozen new photo books a year, and you had the bases covered. Now, it seems that dozens of good photo books are published every day, so it’s hard to keep up. We reviewed a number of wonderful books this year, and narrowed it down to four that stood out. Louisiana Lens – Photographs from the Historic New Orleans Collection – John H. Lawrence. Countdown – Jeanine Michna-Bales and Adam Reynolds – A Visual Exploration of the Cold War’s Opposing Nuclear Architecture. Jamey Stilling – ATACAMA: Renewable Energy and Mining in the High Desert of Chile, and on a more practical level, Declutter Your Photo Life – Adam Pratt. 2023 has been a bumper year for extraordinary musical releases, more than we could hope to cover in detail, so forgive us if we’ve left out your favorites. Here a few notable vendors. TRPTK, Native DSD, The Audiophile Society, 2L The Nordic Sound, and The Jazz Detective are all supplying superlative content, with various resolutions. Although I still have a soft spot for tangible media, from LPs to Blu-ray, the bulk of our current listening is via streaming. Read on for our notes on different services.
