Good tools are what make our work lives run more smoothly, and we routinely rely on web cams, docks, and soundbars. We looked at a variety of products and found two sets of solutions we think will please most folks and their budgets. From Poly (formerly Plantronics), a line of superb webcams and accessories, and from CyberAcoustics, affordable webcams, docks, and soundbars. Finally, we look at the new Lenovo Tab P11 Pro Gen 2 tablet, and mophie – GaN chargers and accessories.

This holiday season, we highlight some books from authors and small, independent publishers that touch on personal and tightly held and defended passions. Elizabeth Waterman tackles the age old conundrum of exotic dancing, while Joni Sternbach’s dogged pursuit of the perfect wave concentrates on the tool of choice, the surfboard. We look at Sandy Sorlien’s treatise on the wetlands and forgotten water systems of the Schuylkill River region, and Peter Goin’s encyclopedic compendium on Lake Tahoe. Penny Wolin created a sympathetic view of a small hotel in the Los Angeles of the 1970s, the inhabitants of which unabashedly understood what it meant to have a roof over their heads. Jessica Hines’ book is intensely personal, a result of her brother Gary’s suicide – an all too common after-effect of the Vietnam War. Maura Sullivan displays her work, somewhat shorn of her fashion sensibility, filled with darkness and mystery, with more delicacy than I thought possible. Renée Jacobs has been creating erotic images of women for years, which seems pretty benign until you realize it really isn’t. Colin Smith’s updated treatise on drone photography and videography is the only how-to book in this list.

Even though Manhattan is the center of the photography universe, amazingly, its never had its own major photography festival. Sure, there are events like PhotoPlus Expo, held each fall at the Javits Center, which offers a combination of a trade show, lectures, seminars, and workshops. However, a dedicated conference in Manhattan just for photography didn’t exist, until the creation of Photoville a few years ago in the DUMBO area of Brooklyn. By the same token, for a very long time, New York hasn’t had any audio shows to compare with AXPONA, or the late great Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, or the ever-more-important Capitol Audio Fest. The New York Audio Show was the antidote.
